If children and young adults are asked about Jazz such as "What
is jazz?" or who are some great jazz musicians, their answers and
knowledge would vary from little to none.  With the demise of
music education in our schools, no wonder they don't know about
jazz, America's music.

Jazz is a testimony of America's life changes and developments, a
historical barometer of the highs and lows of our culture, our
people and our nation.  Jazz can teach everyone a thing or two
about America and how it has influenced the world.

One of the goals of the Freedom Jazz Festival (FJF) is to bring
jazz to the lives and minds of children and youth.  The FJF events
introduce youngsters to basic jazz beats and rhythms within
themselves.  FJF encourages attendance to the festival events
and participation in community workshops where they tape into
their inner jazz skills and talents.  Help FJF develop those
interests and skills so that Jazz lives on!

Jazz for the People!

Digging Jazz!

Children as young as two years old have attended the outdoor Freedom Jazz Festival and participated in the community youth
jazz workshops.  It was such a delight to have a jazz workshop conducted by two master musicians, Bruce Henry and Donald
Washington where 30 inner city children and teenagers participated in "From Africa to Jazz".  It was a rudimentary workshop
where about a third of the children actually knew how to read music and play instruments.  The history of jazz was presented in
simple terms accompanied by African chants, drum beats, early African instruments, to New Orleans jazz swing through bebop to
hip hop.  The kids were fascinated to learn they were experiencing and making jazz and wanted more!

With your help we can offer more opportunities for kids to learn about jazz and learn to like or even love jazz.  You just may be
helping to start a budding career in the jazz music industry or education field.

If you would like to help create a new generation of jazz lovers, you can make a contribution to future Freedom Jazz youth
